Habits Contest Entries - Round 1

Posted in Contests and Memes on September 12th, 2007 by Erin Dietrich

This has been an excellent week reading about so many people’s opinions on habits. Thanks to everyone who has taken the time to submit an entry to Jenny and my contest. We have received 12 entries so far, discovered many great new sites and have learned that some bloggers do not know the meaning of procrastinate! We can already see determining a winner is going to be tough.

I hope you take the time to visit these sites as the overall quality is great. Here is the first batch of entries:

Jason at A Miracle A Day wrote The Subconscious Mind in Control (aka Habits)

John Allison at Technology for Living wrote Default mode: How Habits can help you, and how they don’t

Stephen at HD BizBlog 1.2 wrote Three More Questions About Habits

Liara Covert from Dream Builders wrote How Big a Role Do Habits Play in Your Daily Life?

Stephen, I’m loving checking out all the new sites I’m finding. Wow, there’s some really interesting and smart people out there. Glad you’re having the same experience.

  6. Jenny Says:

Hi! Said this elsewhere but feel it bears repeating.

Just wanted to let you know that I am visiting each one of you (as I am truly interested in the subject of habits and what you have to say) but am noticing that I have somehow become “spam” a large portion of the time when I comment :(

If you do not hear from either Erin or I, check your spam as you just might find me sitting there sadly…

hehe. I laugh at myself. sorry about the title of my post. I had put it that way so I’d know what the post was in case I had to come back to it. Forgot to change it to something more useful/catchy before publishing. ah well.

guess there’s no mistaking what THAT post is about.

I’m also surprised by how fast some of the other bloggers posted their entries.

  11. Erin Says:

Bill, hee hee, this has happened to Jenny and I too.

  12. Jason Says:

Hey, when I’m in a writing mood, get out of my way… I can sometimes crank out 3-4 real, full-fledged, full quality articles in a few hours.

I keep reading that I should slow down on a lot of the blogs about how to grow your blog (like ProBlogger), and the most successful new blogger whom I have talked with (John Place) definitely posts a lot less frequently than I do.

I wonder if I’m hurting myself with my posting frequency… any one (who reads my stuff over at A Miracle A Day) have any opinion on the matter?

And… sorry about all the links, I just hate when I read a post or comment that refers to someone and then doesn’t provide a link.

  13. Erin Says:

Jason, I am always impressed with your productivity. I don’t dare say how long it takes me to write a post!

As far as frequency goes, I think if you have good quality (which I think you do), your frequency is great. It’s fun to visit your blog, or in my case my feedreader, and know that you will have posted at least one, if not several, new articles. However, if you think you are doing too much, there is always the option of starting another blog… :)

  14. Jason Says:

Hmm… I guess that’s true. I’ve thought of starting another blog, more of a “personal” one, just whatever I feel like writing about, whether technology (what can I say, I’m in the IT industry), blogging, or humor. I could even have two personal development ones, though, I suppose, if it would help A Miracle A Day grow.

  15. Erin Says:

Unless the quality suffers, I can’t see how it would hurt.

Oh, and I forgot to say, I like all of the links too. It’s nice to be able to track down the people and articles you mention!

  16. Mark Says:

Jason, if you haven’t already read it, I’d suggest checking out this post before deciding on whether or not you should start two blogs. It just points out a few things to consider.

As for your posting frequency, it’s no problem for me :)

Alister has a lot of great articles on his site, so if anyone hasn’t seen it, I highly suggest having a look around.

  17. Jenny Morman Says:

    Jason,
I think it depends upon what you truly wish to accomplish. There’s a couple of things that might be at odds with each other.

I know your overriding goal is to have people read your stuff in which case it seems posting frequency could go either way as once you’re pretty well engrained in Google for instance it doesn’t matter how new a post is if people key in the correct words you’ll show up. If on the other hand you want people to read and actively interact with you and each other via comments I think posting more than once a day on a regular basis makes this difficult as the conversation is always moving and the longer one spends thinking through and considering what you said in one post the further behind they get with all the other posts and discussions.

Anyhow, guess that’s not much of an answer but a couple more things to consider.

PS. I wonder if these last couple comments should be moved to the Catch-22 post as they fit that content better and other people with the same concerns would be more likely to find them there. It feels slightly wrong to be moving comments around though…
